Paul Hindemith komponierte Symphonic Metamorphosis während seines amerikanischen Exils (1940–1953). Das Werk verrät durch seine kraftvolle und nach außen gekehrte Faktur die Identifizierung des Komponisten mit den Idealen seiner neuen Heimat. Hindemith verwendet Themen von Carl Maria von Weber, die er bis zur Unkenntlichkeit weiterentwickelt und verändert. Das kurz nach der Uraufführung entstandene Arrangement für Blasorchester zeigt die hohe Popularität, die Hindemith in den USA genoss.
