About Dirk Rothbrust

Even at the age of eleven, Dirk Rothbrust knew that drums would be at the center of his life. He studied with Franz Lang and Isao Nakamura in Saarbrücken and Karlsruhe. Since 1995, Dirk Rothbrust has been a member of Schlagquartett Köln. He played in Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin from 2001 to 2008 and became a member of Ensemble Musikfabrik in 2005. Rothbrust is one of the most prominent percussionists in the world today, both as a soloist and an ensemble player. He regularly appears at major European festivals and has collaborated with many of the most significant composers and performers of our time, such as Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Peter Brötzmann, Mouse on Mars, and Pierre Laurent Aimard. For Dirk Rothbrust, the enormous variety of percussion instruments is a permanent challenge to explore and illuminate their sound potential. In the summer of 2018, he was a coach at the Lucerne Festival Academy. As a soloist and as a duo partner with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Roth brust has performed at the Lucerne Festival, Klangspuren Schwaz, Musikfest Berlin, and the Southbank Centre in London. Since 2019, he teaches at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne.
