About Frieder Lang

Frieder Lang grew up in the tradition of Dresden’s Kreuzchor and studied at both the university and conservatory of Cologne, with degrees in music pedagogy, church music, organ, singing, and opera. After winning several vocal competitions, he became active on the international concert scene. He has been a guest at a number of opera houses and works closely with all the radio and television broadcasters. He has made a number of CD recordings, including Schütz, "Musikalische Exequien" with Gardiner; Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Second Symphony (awarded a "Diapason d’Or"); Schöck, "Venus"; Romberg, "Die Glocke"; Henze: "Voices"; Wagner, "Die Feen". Thanks to his musical versatility and stylistic assurance, his repertoire extends from the early history of music to contemporary music, as demonstrated by many world and national premières (Kagel, "Aus Deutschland"; Kurtág wrote his Op. 29 for him; the revised version of Henze’s "Das Ende einer Welt"; Zechlin, "Elissa"). Following an active career teaching at universities in Germany and abroad he was appointed professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, where he also directs the ensemble of vocal soloists. His artistic and personal relationship with Hans Werner Henze dates back to 1966, when Lang played an important role in the coaching and as a soloist in "Moralitäten" and "Musen Siziliens".
