About Yongbom Lee

Yongbom Lee is a Leipzig-based Korean composer and interdisciplinary artist whose work unfolds at the intersection of music, neuroscience, and visual art. His practice explores how bio-signals such as EEG and fNIRS, electroacoustic practices, and embodied performance can be transformed into immersive soundscapes and audiovisual installations. Blending instrumental traditions with digital processes, he explores how distinct elements – analog and digital, signal and noise, intuition and algorithm – undergo topological deformation, reconfiguring modes of listening through his artistic practice.
His music has been commissioned and performed by Ensemble Modern, ZDF/ARTE, ORF Austria 1, Ensemble Recherche, and the Ensemble of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has received numerous awards including the Ö1 Talentebörse Composition Award, the Promotion Award of the City of Vienna, and a Composition Scholarship from the Federal Republic of Germany with the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris.
Furthermore, his music has been featured at festivals and competitions such as impuls Graz, Gaudeamus Festival (Netherlands), Music Biennale Zagreb, the International Haydn Chamber Music Competition (Austria), Musique en Brionnais (France), the Orléans International Piano Competition, and the Kurt Weill Festival (Germany).
Lee studied at Yonsei University in Seoul and later at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. There he worked with Michael Jarrell, Johannes Maria Staud, and Cheong-Mook Kim (composition), Iris Ter-Schiphorst (media composition), and Gesine Schröder (music theory). He was stipendiary composer at the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) in Frankfurt and fellow artist at the Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute in Scotland, UK. Since 2018, he has been a lecturer at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig and is also the founding member of the neuro-art collective “aiar collective”, dedicated to exploring the convergence of sound, technology, and perception.
