About Michael Hoeltzel

After studies at the Stuttgart Conservatory and Salzburg Mozarteum, Michael Hoeltzel enjoyed a distinguished career as solo hornist in orchestras that included the Bamberg Symphony, Camerata Academica Salzburg and the Munich Philharmonic, playing for conductors such as Joseph Keilberth and Rudolf Kempe. An engagement as guest instructor of horn at Indiana University launched an equally illustrious teaching career, and from 1973-2000 Hoeltzel spent three decades as professor of horn at the Detmold Conser vatory. Radovan Vlatkovic, Eric Terwil liger, Bruno Schneider, Allessio Allegrini, and Daniel Katzen are among his many success ful students. Teaching was paralleled by appearances as soloist, and as guest conductor. Among his many recordings, which include concerti by Mozart and Strauss, Dauprat's Grand Sextour has pride of place: Philip Farkas rated it the best horn ensemble recording he'd ever heard. At the time of publishing Mastery of the French Horn (2006), he was appointed visiting professor of horn at the School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington, USA.
