About Klangforum Wien

Klangforum Wien – 24 musicians from ten countries embody an artistic idea and a personal approach, giving back to their art what has been gradually and almost unnoticedly lost over the course of the 20th century: a place in its own time, in the present and in the middle of the community for which it is composed and by which it wants to be heard. Since the first concert performed by the ensemble (then named  Société de l’Art Acoustique) under the musical direction of its founder Beat Furrer at the Palais Liechtenstein, Klangforum Wien unexpectedly has written a chapter in music history: The ensemble has premiered about 500 compositions of composers from three continents and, in doing so, translated their written music into sounds for the first time. More than 70 CDs, 2,000 performances at the top concert and opera houses in Europe, America and Japan as well as various awards and prizes bear testimony to the work of the ensemble. Sylvain Cambreling, Friedrich Cerha and Beat Furrer are the three outstanding musicians to whom Klangforum Wien awarded the ensemble's honorary membership over the course of its 25-year history by unanimous decision of all musicians. Since 1997 Sylvain Cambreling has been principal guest conductor of Klangforum Wien.
