About Jamilia Jazylbekova

Jamilia Jazylbekova was born in Kaskelen, Kazakhstan, in 1971. After studying flute and piano at the State School of Music in Almaty (1980-89), she moved to Moscow to study composition with Nikolai Sidelnikov and Vladimir Tarnopolski at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. From 1995 to 1997 she received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to travel to Germany, where she continued her composition studies with Younghi Pagh-Paan at Bremen University of the Arts (until 2002). She also took courses in analysis and electronic composition with Günter Steinke and voice lessons with Maria Kowollik. Her works have been performed at many festivals in Europe, the CIS states, Canada, and the United States by such leading ensembles as the Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Modern, Oslo Sinfonietta, Ensemble Aventure, Klangforum Wien, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, ensemble mosaik, Remix Ensemble, and Quatuor Diotima. She has received commissions for new works from the Theater and Philharmonic Orchestra of Heidelberg, the MaerzMusik Festival, Deutschlandfunk, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Ensemble Remix, Casa da Música Porto, Imago-Dei Festival Krems, the Berlin Biennale, the senates of Berlin and Bremen, Ensemble Courage, Ensemble Intégrales, Nieuw Ensemble, de ereprijs orkest, the city of Oldenburg, the International Gaudeamus Music Week, and the Basler Musikmonat (2001).

Jamilia Jazylbekova is active not only as a composer but also as a singer, flutist, and pianist.
