Water! Water! ist ein ungewöhnliches Stück, das Harry Partch im Auftrag des Illini Union Student Board der Universitat Illinois komponierte. Anlässlich der drei Aufführungen im Jahr 1962 und im Vergleich zu seinen beiden anderen Bühnenwerken aus dieser Zeit The Bewitched und Revelation in the Courthouse Park sagte Partch darüber: “Dies ist eine Burleske … aber kein vollendetes Werk. Die zwei oder auch vielen weiteren Jahre, die man wirklich braucht, um eine solche Idee zu erwägen und zu entwickeln, standen nicht zur Verfügung und es blieb keine Zeit, die Techniken dieser Burleske in langen Proben zu erarbeiten... Zwischen dem Beginn der Komposition und der Aufführung vergingen lediglich zehn Monate.“
