The Estonian word Helletused refers to melodious calls based on certain vowels or interjections, sung by herdboys. Each herder had his or her characteristic call which varied according to the time of day, weather or mood. This work is based on calls by Aimo Tamm elaborated in Miina Härmä's lied The Singer's Childhood, which has been popular among Estonians for a hundred years.
