'Cage said of these harmonies: 'The cadences and all that disappear, but the character remains. It is recognizable as 18th century music, but suddenly it is billant in a new way." The challenge for us in the performance was to find the "thread" of the music and bring each piece to the end, even if the score sometimes looked as if someone had smeared corrections over whole sections. It was a very fulfilling and reassuring activity to arrange these hymns and chorales for string instruments. What a perfect homage to Cage it is to realize another work for string quartet"
