Dieses Stück für unbegleiteten gemischten Chor (mit häufigen Stimmteilungen) wurde von Ralph Allwood für die Übertragung des Eton Choral Course im Jahr 1987 bei  Radio 3 in Auftrag gegeben. Das unnachahmliche Gedicht von Phineas Fletcher ist vor allem durch die zeitlos schöne Hymne von Gibbons und die sehr populäre Vertonung von Walton bekannt. Aber diese Vertonung ist ein bisschen anders - sie ist harmonisch komplex und hält einige Herausforderungen für Chöre der mittleren Könnensstufe bereit. Wenn die Spracheigentümlichkeiten des Textes erst einmal gemeistert sind, vermittelt sich die grundlegende Leidenschaft der Worte Fletchers, und die Mühen lohne sich für Chor und Publikum gleichermaßen. Das Gedicht ist bogenförmig aufgebaut mit einer zentralen Strophe, die bei ‘to cry for vengeance sin doth never cease’ wahrhaft leidenschaftlich wird. Die letzte Strophe ist tröstlich und der Komponist ertappt sich dabei, wie er den Anfang von Gibbons Vertonung zitiert, die hier wie aus dem Nichts, fast wie ein Segen daherkommt.
