Description

The 14th-century Eucharistic text ‘Ave verum’ has been set to music by many composers over the centuries, no doubt drawn to its vivid and powerful imagery. Todd first set the words (for SATB choir) in 2001, but this different setting is the fourth movement of a larger work, Songs of Peace, which was written in 2012 in memory of the composer’s mother.
The unison first verse is introduces the beautiful melody which fits naturally into the lush harmony supplied in the piano part. A second, often imitative part is added for the second verse, though the piece doesn’t stray too far from its very approachable nature. There is occasional optional further divisi, which adds extra harmonic effects when included.
