Sherri Jones

About Sherri Jones

Whether in repertoire choice or its interpretation, Sherri Jones gravitates towards the unexpected. Her virtuosic playing has been lauded for its “utterly innate sense for the character and expression” of a work and for interpretations that are “uncannily organic and multi-layered in perspective” (“Neue Zeitschrift für Musik”). The pianist has for decades devoted her energies to the promotion of twentieth-century compositions decidedly off the beaten path. Among her many premieres are works by Kurt Weill, Stefan Wolpe, Volker David Kirchner, and David Lidov. Her benchmark recording of Erwin Schulhoff’s artistic jazz, “Hot Music” (WERGO CD, WER 62812), drew international praise, while “FonoForum” proclaimed Ins Spiel gebracht (Baroque in the Modern) “sensational.” Posterity has her to thank for the tracing out and publication of Kurt Weill’s only completed work for piano, and between 2009 and 2012 she premiered Georg Kreisler’s early unknown piano and chamber music and oversaw their first editions.

She was a regular gold-medal winner of national competitions in her youth and an honors graduate of Indiana University, where she studied with György Sebök and Menahem Pressler, was in demand as a collaborative partner, and was awarded the Performer’s Certificate – the school of music’s paramount honor for solistic achievement – in a rare unanimous decision. At the University of Illinois she completed the DMA with a performance-thesis on transcriptions by Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Busoni, and preceding her move to Germany taught at several American universities. The juxtaposition of rarities and standards has long been a programming trademark of her concerts and premieres in Europe and North America, radio and CD recordings, as well as first editions, which together continue to expand the confines of the piano repertory.
