About Goetz Schumacher

Cleverly compiled programs are characteristic of the work of Andreas Grau and Götz Schumacher and have earned them an international reputation as one of the world’s most distinguished duo-piano teams. Their interaction at the piano reveals them to be artistic soul mates. With their broad spectrum of expressive possibilities, they have been guests at numerous festivals and concert halls. They have also worked with conductors such as Michael Gielen, Lothar Zagrosek, Emanuel Krivine, Heinz Holliger, Kent Nagano, Bertrand de Billy, Andrey Boreyko, Georges Prêtre, and Zubin Mehta.

Their talent for carefully crafted program concepts is documented in their CD releases. Their recording of Stockhausen’s “MANTRA” has been awarded prizes by “Le monde de la musique” and “Diapason” magazines. Their CD “Visions de l’Amen” with works by Messiaen and Schütz/Kurtág was an “Editor’s Choice” in “Gramophone” magazine.

In the last few years, their CDs have included: “mehrere kurze walzer” (works by Schubert, Brahms, Grieg, Hindemith, and Rihm), “variations and fugues” (music by Mozart, Reger, and Beethoven), “Fantasia contrappuntistica” (pieces by Bach, Kurtág, and Busoni), “Ligeti–Schubert–Ligeti – an experimental recital”, “Grand Duo” (with Schubert and Shostakovich works), and “La musique creuse le ciel” (Wolfgang Rihm). Their recordings with orchestral works by Luciano Berio and Stravinsky’s “Le Sacre du Printemps” have been enthusiastically received by critics. Their CD “Concerti I” with the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin combines the concertos for two pianos by Mozart and Bartók with the “Concerto Pathétique” by Liszt. Their most recent CD features piano transcriptions of famous pieces by composers ranging from Bach to the great Romantic masters.
