About Wei Wu

Wu Wei (born in 1970 in the Peoples Republic of China) completed his studies of the sheng in the Shanghai Conservatory and was a soloist with the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra before he received a DAAD scholarship to study at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin – where he is based now. Since 2013 he is Professor at the Shanghai Music Conservatory.

As a sheng soloist he has appeared at the world’s prestigious festivals and venues with many leading orchestras and ensembles, including Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Kent Nagano), Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (Gustavo Dudamel), Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra (Myung-Whun Chung), BBC Symphony Orchestra (Ilan Volkov), Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (Susanna Mälkki), Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (Matthias Pintscher), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, NDR Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern etc.

He has premiered more than 280 works (including ten concertos for sheng and orchestra) from composers such as John Cage, Unsuk Chin, Toshio Hosokawa, Enjott Schneider, Jörg Widmann, Guus Janssen, Tan Dun, Chen Qigang, Guo Weijing, and Ruo Huang. He has also himself composed many works for sheng.

With “his extraordinary virtuosity” (The Guardian) his performance was one of the highlights at the BBC Proms in 2014. Wu Wei appears on numerous CDs and DVDs and was awarded several international prizes, e.g. Musica Vitale, Global Root, German Record Critics’ Award, Herald Angels Award, and Classical Music Award 2015 for Unsuk Chins “Su – Concerto for Sheng and Orchestra”.
