About Liza Lim

Liza Lim was born the daughter to Chinese parents in Perth, Australia in 1966. There she studied composition at the Victorian College of the Arts and the University of Melbourne with Richard D. Hames and Riccardo Formosa. Further studies took place in Amsterdam with Ton de Leeuw. Lim has worked closely for many years with the Australian ELISION Ensemble.

Lim has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Ensemble Intercontem porain, Ensemble Modern, Salzburger Festspiele, Festival d’Automne Paris, Lucerne Festival, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Donaueschinger Musiktage and the Holland Festival. In 2008, the first performances of her opera “The Navigator” took place at the Melbourne and Brisbane Festivals and later at the Chekhov International Theatre Festival Moscow and the Festival d’Automne a Paris.

Lim is the recipient of many awards including the Paul Lowin Award of Australia, fellowships from the Fromm Foundation, the Ian Potter Foundation and the Australia Council. In 2007/08 Lim was a guest of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. Lim has been a guest lecturer at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, University of California, Cornell University, Getty Research Institute, Melbourne University as well as the Agora Festival Paris. In March 2008 Lim took up the position of Professor of Composition and Director of the Centre for Research in New Music at the University of Huddersfield.
